Commissioner Diana Irey Vaughan
Diana Irey VaughanAbout Commissioner Irey Vaughan
Diana Irey Vaughan, elected in 1996, is the youngest person and only woman ever to be elected as a Washington County Commissioner. She is active as a leader and a member of numerous church and civic groups. Not long after taking office, Diana led the charge to consult with an independent financial advisor, resulting in $1.6 million in savings to the county treasury over a three-year period. She has worked to keep taxes low and has passed a balanced budget for four consecutive years with no tax increase. Further, she arranged for several local cable networks to televise public meetings at no cost to taxpayers in an effort to allow all residents the opportunity to watch the meetings.

Commissioner Vaughan serves on the Board of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Corporation, where she co-chaired its committee to develop the former Alcoa Building into a regional economic development resource center. She also serves on the Board of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Growth Alliance and Pittsburgh Regional Alliance. Diana was appointed by Governor Ridge to the Board of the Port of Pittsburgh Commission. She served two years in the elected position of District II Representative for the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania. She is president of the Mon Valley United Way.

Personal Life
As a mother, Diana recognizes a crucial part of county government is the service rendered to children and youth. She has been outspoken in her quest to ensure that services are delivered in a competent and caring manner. Because of her passion for these matters, she has served on the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania Human Services Committee and on the National Association of Counties’ Human Services and Education Committee.

Honors
For the above achievements and other endeavors, she was named one of the top "60 Pittsburghers of the Year" by Pittsburgh Magazine in December 1999 and was honored to be chosen as the 1998 Spring Distinguished Ethics speaker for the Beard Center for Leadership in Ethics at Duquesne University.
