Background Certifications (Clearances)

Background Clearances


Certain individuals are required to obtain background clearances in order to work or volunteer with children. Required clearances may include the following:
  • PA Child Abuse History Clearance
  • PA State Police Criminal Record Check
  • Federal Bureau of Investigation Criminal Background Check

Who needs clearances?


  • Employees having contact with children
  • Foster and adoptive parents
  • School employees
  • Volunteers

Obtaining clearances


Application and payment for all of the clearances can be made online. The FBI clearance also requires fingerprinting. Information about how to obtain each of the required background clearances, and links to apply for the clearances can be found at

Renewal Requirements


Beginning December 31, 2014 clearances must be obtained every 36 months. When beginning a new position with another employer, institution, organization or another entity that is responsible for the care, supervision, guidance or control of children, new clearances must be obtained.
